Antique Sapi Female Stone Head – Sierra Leone, West Africa

This exceptional hand-carved female soapstone head and bust originates from Sierra Leone, West Africa, and comes from a private collection assembled over more than 30 years of collecting authentic African tribal art and antiques.

Carved from soapstone (steatite), the sculpture depicts a female with prominent breasts, an elaborately carved coiffure (hairstyle), expressive facial features, and a rich brown patina developed through age and handling. The sculptor devoted particular attention to the elegant hairstyle and facial modelling, creating a work of remarkable presence despite its compact size.

The naturally weathered surface and aged patina enhance both the beauty and authenticity of this historic sculpture.

Historical Background

Stone sculptures from the Upper Guinea Coast, including present-day Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia, represent one of West Africa's most important artistic traditions.

Carved from soapstone (steatite), these sculptures are commonly known as Nomoli among the Mende people and Pomdo (or Pomtan) among the Kissi. Many examples have been discovered during farming and mining, often without archaeological context, contributing to the mystery surrounding their origins.

Many scholars associate this tradition with the historic Sapi, Temne, and Bullom peoples. Stone sculptures of this tradition are generally believed to have been produced between the 12th and 16th centuries, although the exact age and original maker of this individual sculpture cannot be determined without archaeological provenance or scientific analysis.

Female sculptures of this type are especially admired for their elaborate hairstyles, carefully modelled breasts, expressive features, and refined carving. These characteristics may represent ideals of beauty, social status, ancestry, or spiritual importance, although their original purpose remains the subject of ongoing scholarly research.

Today, authentic Sierra Leone soapstone sculptures are highly sought after by collectors and museums because of their artistic quality, historical significance, and rarity.
